For first article I'll have to start with probably one of the best known 'LONG' fences of the world, the Australian Dingo Fence. The Dingo Fence (also known as he 'Wild Dog Fence' in Queensland), is over 5000km long (thats approximately 3125 miles) is supposed to be the longest fence in the world. The give an idea of its size, the coastline of mainland Ireland is approximately 5600km (3500 miles) or you could travel between Edinburgh and London (536km or 333 miles) approximately 10 times !. Its construction was started in the 1880's and is currently maintained on a continuous basis - apparently they have numerous problems with the elements and wild camels to name a few. The general construction of the fence is 1.80 metre high mesh fencing supported on wood posts with the mesh being buried or laid flat on the floor at its base. I suppose the fence design in itself is not really that remarkable, however it's location, the terrain and its length certainly are. Working away from home certainly takes on a whole new meaning for the guys who look after this fence which must at some points be in the least inhabited and most remote areas of the world. After reading some articles on the web, one of the requirements for working on the fence is that you must be able to fly an airplane ! - Apparently, some of the rapid maintenance gangs use airplanes to spot and carry out repairs to damaged sections of the fence. Have a look on the web for more information about this great fence of the world. You can also look here on the wikipedia web site. |
